"Go As a River" is a moving coming-of-age novel set in rural Colorado from 1948 to 1971. The story follows Victoria Nash, a young girl growing up on a family peach farm, whose life is filled with hardship and loss due to the tragic deaths of her mother and older brother. As she struggles to overcome her grief, she meets and falls in love with Wilson Moon, a mysterious Native American wanderer. She gets pregnant from their brief but passionate love affair. However, her brother Seth, an alcoholic prone to violence, lynches Wilson. After Wilson's death, Victoria feel surrounded by hostility and fear, leading her to retreat to the mountains, where she gives birth alone and lives in isolation.

Limited by seclusion and concerns for her child's well-being, Victoria eventually decides to return to the city. On her way back, she encounters a young family on a picnic in the mountains and secretly leaves her child in their car, relinquishing her parental rights. Later, Victoria's hometown of Iola is submerged under a reservoir due to a new dam construction on a nearby river. Remarkably, she manages to relocate the peach orchard, the sole legacy of her dwindled family, to a new town, and the process helps her heal and reconnect with the world. Eventually, she is reunited with her son, now a grown man who has returned from serving in the Vietnam War.

Victoria's journey is a tale of strength and perseverance as she navigates the complexities of being a single mother and the societal judgments she faces. The beautiful yet harsh landscape of Colorado and the peach orchard she tends to symbolize her inner turmoil and growth. The novel depicts Victoria's struggle to reclaim her life and identity amidst personal and environmental challenges, showcasing the enduring power of hope and resilience. The story evokes memories of Park Kyung-ni's "Land," Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind," and Jung You-jung's "Seven Years of Night."

[게으른 독후감 #16 - 흐르는 강물처럼 - 셀리 리드 저 ⭐️⭐️⭐️]  '흐르는 강물처럼'은 20세기 중반 콜로라도의 시골을 배경으로 한 감동적인 성장 소설이다. 복숭아 농장에서 자라는 소녀인 주인공 빅토리아 내쉬의 삶은 어머니와 오빠의 비극적인 죽음으로 인한 고난과 상실로 가득 차 있다. 슬픔을 극복하려 애쓰는 가운데, 신비로운 방랑자이자 원주민인 윌슨 문을 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 그들의 짧지만 열정적인 사랑으로 빅토리아는 임신하게 되지만, 알콜중독과 폭력을 일삼는 빅토리아의 남동생 세스의 인종차별적 린칭을 당하고 죽게 되는 윌슨을 떠나보낸 후 가족과 주변으로부터는 적대감과 두려움 밖에 느끼지 못하고 결국 빅토리아는 속세와는 연을 끊고 산으로 도망쳐 혼자 출산을 하고 단절된 생활을 한다. 그러나 결국 산속의 야인 생활에 한계를 느끼고 아이의 안녕을 위해 다시 도시로 돌아오던 중 산 속으로 소풍을 나온 젊은 가족을 발견하고 그들에 차에 몰래 아이를 두고 오며 양육을 포기하게 된다. 이후 그녀가 자란 아이올라 동네는 인근 강의 저수지 댐 공사로 인해 저수지 밑으로 잠기게 되고 그녀는 가족의 유일한 유산인 복숭아 과수원을 타지로 옮기는 대대적 업적을 이루며 자신을 치유하고 세상과 다시 연결된 인생을 살다가 베트남전에 참전하고 돌아온 어엿한 청년이 된 아들과 극적인 재회를 하게 된다.

빅토리아의 여정은 싱글 맘으로서의 복잡한 상황과 사회적 판단을 헤쳐 나가야 하는 강인함과 인내의 이야기이다. 이 모든 과정에서 콜로라도의 아름답고 혹독한 자연과 그녀가 돌보는 복숭아 과수원은 그녀의 내면 갈등과 성장을 상징하는 배경으로 작용한다. 이 소설은 개인적, 환경적 역경 속에서 자신의 삶과 정체성을 되찾기 위해 싸우는 빅토리아의 투쟁을 그리며, 희망과 회복력의 지속적인 힘을 보여준다. 박경리의 ‘토지’가 생각났고 마거릿 미첼의 ‘바람과 함께 사라지다'가 생각났고 정유정의 ‘7년의 밤’이 생각났다.
